Indrajit Lahiri strongly feels that the qualty of minds must be maintained in IITs. The old IITs themselves are far from perfect, he says. They need to keep their focus on relevance to Indian Industry. Virtually every new IIT wants to jump 50 years to the old IITs’ status. If we aspire for 30 IITs, I am afraid, the directors, top faculty etc all be running helter skelter for land, building, etc. We need to keep an eye on the quality. Obviously the top 2000 students will be better than the top 10,000 students.
